Why is there discrepancy between monthly unique clicks and total unique clicks?

Why is there a discrepancy, between the unique clicks or refferals, between the year to date totals, and the monthly totals.? I started the affiliate program after Jan 16th 2001. And I noticed the TOTAL uniques clicks registered for the month of January, differs from the Year to date TOTALS by about 4 clicks. WHY IS THIS SO?

ANSWER: Say that Sam and Dan visited your site in January. Your unique clicks for January is 2. But in Febuary, Sam revisited your site, and 2 other brand new persons also visited your site. Your unique clicks for Febuary is 3. Your total unique clicks is only 4, not 5.
